Springtime in Paris suggests mornings strolling down grand boulevards, afternoons relaxing in the verdant city parks, and evenings in cafés drinking coffee and wine. Walking through the city is a dazzling pleasure and justly considered to be a hobby in its own right.
This uniquely Parisian experience is due, in large part, to one man: Baron Haussmann. In 1853, Haussmann was chosen by Emperor Napoleon III to be the head of an immense public works project, which became known as “Haussmann’s renovation of Paris.”
Before this undertaking, Paris was considered to be overcrowded, dangerous and dirty. Once appointed, however, Haussmann was determined to create a beautiful, modern Paris. His guiding principle was “light before all else.” To this goal, Haussmann designed beautiful straight boulevards lined with trees, transforming Paris into a lovely place to walk; he built tens of thousands of new streetlights, turning Parisian evenings into social occasions; he even established detailed rules for “the Haussmann façade,” which is the outward appearance of a typical Parisian apartment building.
So the next time you’re in a café in Paris, admiring the intricate wrought-iron railings and the lush trees lining the street, lift your glass to toast that visionary from over a century ago.
