The constellations visible to us change depending on the season, the time of night, even the location on Earth.  So what night sky does this scarf depict?  A warm summer evening in the Pacific Northwest.
Looking at the constellations themselves, some may seem unfamiliar. Certain constellation outlines have been updated to better reflect modern knowledge, while others have been changed to more accurately follow their origin myths.
The faint constellation Camelopardalis represents a giraffe, but is often drawn according to the 17th century rough idea of what a giraffe looked like.  Here, the giraffe’s portrayal has been modernized.
The constellation of the Gemini twins are often shown as women or children.  However, the original myth tells of the warrior twins Pollux and Castor; these warrior twins represent our Gemini constellation.
Other constellations may feel familiar.  Ursa major, “the great bear,” is one of the oldest constellations, with roots in many ancient civilizations.  Here, it has retained its traditional depiction.
The view of these stars is framed by cedar, alder, sallal, blackberries, and other plants that flourish in the Pacific Northwest summer.  As evening gives way to night, Aries falls out of view while Virgo climbs.
