In the Pacific Northwest, mushrooms are a common sight and range from minuscule dainty bells to sprawling formations. On cool misty mornings, mushrooming— mushroom hunting—is a tempting sport. However, while this sport can yield rich rewards, there can also be fatal consequences for those who are careless.
Starting in one corner of the scarf, there are a variety of tasty treats ready to be gathered in the Cascade Mountain range. Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) are plentiful and edible, golden chanterelles are highly sought after for their delicate flavor, and even ponderosa pine cones contain seeds that can be used to make bread.
Moving toward the middle of the scarf, the findings start to become less appetizing; for example, Russula rosea, a striking mushroom with a rosy reddish pink cap, tastes terrible but isn’t poisonous.
The far corner of the scarf, however, acts as a warning. This area contains perils such as the death cap mushroom, one of the most poisonous toadstools in the world—half a mushroom can kill an adult human.
A beautiful delicacy, or beautiful and deadly? Only an experienced forager with a keen eye will know. For most visitors, the shadowy forests of the Cascade Mountains are filled with mystery.
