In the 19th century, the northern expanse of the Cascade Mountain range in Washington State was a vast wilderness, resplendent with an array of flora and fauna. At the center of this vibrant food web sat the keystone predator: the grizzly bear.
Unfortunately, the grizzly was admired more for its impressive pelt than its role in the ecosystem, and it was zealously hunted through the 1800s and early 1900s. The grizzly population dwindled through the 1900s, with the last documented killing of a grizzly bear occurring in Fisher Creek Basin in 1967. The North Cascades National Park was established the following year, protecting the wildlife within its borders. Grizzly sightings have been scarce since the park was established, with current estimates placing the bear population at 10-20 individuals total for the entire park. Although the grizzly bear is now considered an endangered species, hope is not lost.
In recent years, there has been a movement to reintroduce grizzly bears to the North Cascades National Park. Not only would this benefit the grizzly population itself, but it would improve the entire local ecosystem, since the bears play key roles in nitrogen cycling, seed distribution, prey population regulation, and more.
Evenfall shows a snapshot of this ecosystem with the grizzly bear at the center: what it looked like in decades past and what it could look like in decades to come.
